In this essay, Rev. Gustafson discusses what the Augsburg Confession says about polity (church structure), especially in AC XXVII. Putting forth seven thesis, he first deals with the issues involving the pastoral office as they relate to polity, then comments on the present day situation in the ELCA and LCMS, and finally offers some suggestions for reform.
