Why are some saved, and not others?

By Bryan Wolfmueller

Why some and not others? (cur alii, alii non?) The question is called, by the Lutheran Theologians, the Crux Theologrum, the cross of the theologian. Three things the Bible teaches that don't fit together in our minds: 1. Universal Grace, that Christ died for all and God wills for all to be saved. * John 3:16 * 2 Peter 3:9 * 1 John 2:1-2 2. Grace Alone (sola fide), that God alone saves us (apart from our works and without the assistance of our will, monergism) * Ephesians 2:8-9 3. Hell, that there are those who are lost and condemned * Matthew 8:12 * Matthew 25:41 Other passages mentioned: Hosea 13:9, "9 O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself; but in me is thine help." Romans 11:33-36, "O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counseller? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen." Download a free copy of "Outlines of Dogmatic Theology" by A. L.
